Global GreenTag certified product 'Enviro Hide by Emtech' wins the Gold award for Product Design in Australia's International Good Design Awards.

The Global GreenTag PlatinumHEALTH™ HealthRATE™ certified, circular product 'Enviro Hide by EmTech' made from recycled leather, has won the Gold award for Product Design in Australia's International Good Design Awards for Design Excellence, 2022.

The award-winning product, Enviro Hide by Emtech from Laytoncorp is a sustainable, circular economy product that could be transformative for furnishing, automotive, aviation and fashion manufacturing. Through a unique process, leather waste is re-constituted to form new lengths of Enviro Hide repeatedly, thus minimising the impact of creating lengths of leather from raw animal hide.

The product is 100% recyclable, allowing for sustainable alternatives to chemical contamination and high water usage created by traditional leather manufacturing. Enviro Hide instead creates circular economy opportunities in the manufacturing of consumer products, using disruptive and unique chemical-free technology that utilises leather off-cuts and waste to produce reconstituted leather.

David Baggs, CEO & Program Director of Global GreenTag International says: "Enviro Hide by Emtech demonstrates how the linear economy can be eliminated. More and more products, including furnishings, end up in landfill and are harmful to the environment. We are very impressed with Laytoncorp's achievement. It is a well-deserved award. During the certification process, Global GreenTag's assessors found that the level of product stewardship of Enviro Hide combined with its non-toxic, circular economy principles in design and execution to be stellar."

Mary-Lou Kelly, General Manager of Global GreenTag International added: "Laytoncorp's ingenuity is to be congratulated. Enviro Hide by Emtech sets high industry standards in terms of sustainability; it's a genuine role model."

To set itself apart from competitors in the market, Laytoncorp submitted Enviro Hide to undergo a Global GreenTag Product Health Declaration™ (GreenTag PHD™) that investigates a product's impact on the health of humans and the environment. Enviro Hide's Global GreenTag PlatinumHEALTH™ HealthRATE™ certification outcome from this process was an excellent result to clearly communicate for industry and consumers alike the measurement of Enviro Hide's levels of healthiness-in-use.

Steve Layton, Founder of Laytoncorp says: "We are extremely proud that Global GreenTag and now Australia's Good Design Awards have recognised and verified the significant contribution that Enviro Hide can make in reducing waste, as well as water and chemical use."

"At a time when the circular economy and sustainability are so important to us all, it is critical that there are independent assurance bodies in place."

Patrizia Torelli, Australian Furniture Association CEO added: "It is great to see one of our AFA Members recognised for designing a circular economy game-changer that reduces the high environmental and wastage costs of leather for manufacturers worldwide."

Enviro Hide's recognition will hopefully raise further awareness of the issue that toxicity and waste from the traditional leather industry still poses a significant, global environmental problem. It is estimated that only 20% of one metric ton of animal hide is converted into usable leather product, leaving significant solid and liquid waste behind.

In comparison, Enviro Hide breaks ground in the leather industry. It reduces off-cut waste as well as providing the market with a leather product that is durable, lightweight, soft to the touch, low maintenance and long-lasting. It is 70% of the weight of traditional leather and 20% stronger than split leather and can be made in any length, colour, or embossed texture.

Enviro Hide's perfect combination of design and technology also caught the attention of Dr. Brandon Gien, Chair of the Australian Good Design Awards who said:

"The Good Design Award is a valuable independent endorsement of professional design quality. It tells the world this project not only represents design excellence, but it also surpasses the criteria for design innovation and design impact."

The 2022 Good Design Awards gathered outstanding design projects from Australia and around the world that were assessed by a group of Australian and international Jurors, including designers, engineers, architects and thought leaders. Each entry was evaluated, following a strict set of design evaluation criteria, which includes Good Design, Design Innovation and Design Impact.

Brett Hazlett, Global Sales Certification Strategist with Global GreenTag International caught up with Steve Layton at the recent Australasian Waste and Recycling Expo in Sydney to talk about Enviro Hide and the technology behind it. Check out the video of their conversation below!
