Global GreenTag International Opens Public Consultation on Ceramic Tile Product Category Rules for Environmental Product Declarations

Stakeholder feedback invited from Wednesday, 22 July to Friday, 21 August

Global GreenTag International's Environmental Product Declaration (EPD) Program is inviting manufacturers, industry professionals, technical experts, specifiers, researchers and other interested stakeholders to participate in a public consultation on the draft Product Category Rules (PCR): Ceramic Tile Sub-PCR.

The sub-PCR rules, compiled by Delwyn Jones, Principal Scientist, The Evah Institute of Ecquate Pty Ltd have been approved for adoption by the Global GreenTagCertTM EPD program.

The consultation opens Wednesday, 22 July and closes Friday, 21 August, providing stakeholders with the opportunity to review and comment on the draft before it is finalised for use within the Global GreenTag International EPD Program.

Product Category Rules (PCRs) are fundamental technical documents that ensure Environmental Product Declarations (EPDs) are developed using consistent, transparent and scientifically robust methodologies. They establish the rules, requirements and assumptions for conducting Life Cycle Assessments (LCAs) and producing comparable environmental information for products within a defined category.

The draft Ceramic Tile Sub-PCR provides specific requirements for preparing EPDs for ceramic tile products, while aligning with the core rules for construction products established under EN 15804. It should be used alongside the Global GreenTag International EPD Program Instructions to ensure the development of high-quality, internationally aligned Environmental Product Declarations.

The document serves as a practical guide for manufacturers developing EPDs, as well as specifiers, sustainability consultants, procurement professionals and other stakeholders seeking confidence in the environmental information provided for ceramic tile products.

Product Scope

The draft Sub-PCR applies to ceramic tiles and associated products used in commercial, residential and industrial buildings, including products for:

• Interior and exterior applications
• Dry and wet areas
• Wall and floor tiles
• Paving
• Façades
• Countertops

The product category includes ceramic products manufactured from materials such as clay, sand, stone, glass, minerals and composite ceramic materials, including fired, glazed, refractory, porcelain, earthenware, stoneware and brick-based products.

The PCR establishes requirements for reporting environmental performance under defined reference conditions and references internationally recognised standards governing ceramic products, terminology, installation, durability, performance, slip resistance and product classification, including relevant Australian Standards, ISO Standards and ASTM requirements.

Supporting Transparent Environmental Claims

By establishing consistent rules for Environmental Product Declarations, the Ceramic Tile Sub-PCR supports credible, independently verified environmental information that can be relied upon by designers, architects, builders, developers, procurement professionals and green building rating systems.

Global GreenTag International encourages broad participation in the consultation process to ensure the final PCR reflects current best practice, technical expertise and industry needs.

Invitation for Comment

Stakeholders are invited to review the draft Ceramic Tile Sub-PCR and submit technical, editorial or general comments during the consultation period.
