Meet the Dedicated and Passionate Product Assessors Behind Global GreenTag Cert TM Certification

Global GreenTag International’s team of product assessors are often found absorbed deeply in product information, toxicology reports, research papers, Life Cycle Inventory datasets and delving deep into global product supply chains.

It is all in a day’s work for this dedicated team of expert product assessors.  Each are highly driven and focused in going about their specialised assessment processes and working with manufacturers and suppliers from around the world.  All of whom like our product assessors are committed to the journey of expanding the boundaries of sustainable materials development and production in order to bring green products across the line as third party certified and rated with Global GreenTag’s certification, declaration and verification processes.

David Baggs, Program Director of Global GreenTag CertTM and co-founder with Managing Director Mary-Lou Kelly of Global GreenTag International’s three Product Certification Standards, says:

“We are enormously proud of the team. Both the highly qualified core team of assessors at Global GreenTag International, who are led by lead product assessors Dr Nana Bortsie-Ayree and Dr Judy Luo and our associated team members who work specifically in Life Cycle Assessment (LCA) and as custodians of extensive and comprehensive Life Cycle Inventory (LCI) supply chain databases with the Evah Institute, that is led by Delwyn Jones a renowned Sustainability Scientist.

“The brains and experience trust represented by all members combined is staggering,” says David.

“They come from a wide range of scientific knowledge backgrounds, including from the fields of engineering, the sustainable built environment, materials specialisation, lead auditing and environmental sciences and management.”

“The momentum for ISO & EN standard certified products is growing and especially for advanced product certification programs that can be trusted,” David adds.

“GreenTag has become super busy in the last year as a result of this demand. We have welcomed major new agencies to handle the demand for Global GreenTag certification, including Mainland China and the Republic of Korea as more and more manufacturers are turning the tide to upgrade their processes to be more sustainable and release more and more greener products into the global market.

“Plus we have some major new assessment projects coming up as well that we are all very excited about and the assessment team are looking forward to the challenge. We shall be talking about this very soon. Stay tuned!”

WELL™ Building Standard ‘Equivalencies’ for Products with Global GreenTag Certificates will ROLL OUT IN JANUARY

The organisation for bringing healthy Global GreenTag certified building and interiors products comprehensively and transparently into alignment with the WELLTM  tool has officially begun.

As of January 1, 2018, all GreenTag International Standard version 4.0 Certified Products will have relevant WELLTM Building Standard Equivalency recognition/s included on their Global GreenTag Certificates.

For equivalencies that require the Global GreenTag Product Health DeclarationTM (PhDTM ), the WELL equivalencies won’t be added to a certificate, unless there is also a PhD available.  Hence from January, if people see a new product certificate, dated 2018 without WELL  Building Standard equivalencies, they will know that the product is not currently relevant to WELL;  and, if they see a certification with WELL equivalence, it will tell them (where relevant) if it needs a PhD certificate as well, to comply with the WELL Feature requirements.

“Manufacturers with products certified with Global GreenTag and with PhDs have a lot to look forward to in the New Year as the full scope of WELL  ‘equivalencies’ for GreenTag certified products comes into play,” says David Baggs, Global GreenTag’s CEO and Program Director.

“The WELL standard is moving very fast into the market and having a big impact on products and procurement. There will also likely be further updates in 2018, which we will announce to manufacturers as they unfold.”

Meanwhile, Global GreenTag Certified products with PhDs now have the opportunity to step more easily into the rapidly expanding Australian WELL  market but also the USA and 30+ other countries where WELL  projects have a significant presence.  “In Australia alone, the International WELL Building Institute already has forged strong partnerships with companies like DEXUS, CBRE, Mirvac, CBUS Properties and Lend Lease … it’s a promising time for manufacturers with GreenTag certified products,” says David.

MOVE INTO THE WELL MARKET

How Global GreenTagCertTM Fits With WELLTM

WELL does not use a points system, a project achieves ‘Features’ or not. For systems not included in the original Guide, an ‘Equivalency’ system is used for recognition of additional certification systems.

The following Features relate to Global GreenTag:

Feature 04 VOC Reduction (Equivalency Approved)

  • PART 1: Interior Paints and Coatings
  • PART 2: Interior Adhesives and Sealants
  • PART 3: Flooring
  • PART 4: Insulation
  • PART 5: Furniture and Furnishings

Feature 11 Fundamental Material Safety (Equivalency Approved)

  • PART 1a: Asbestos & Lead Restriction

Feature 26 Enhanced Material Safety (Equivalency Approved)

Feature 97 Material Transparency (Equivalency Approved)

  • PART 1: Precautionary Material Selection

Equivalency with other Features has been applied for and are in process..stay tuned!

AN EXTRA LAYER OF TRUST FOR GREENTAG CERTIFIED PRODUCTS … GreenTag is NOW Verified ISO 17065 and ISO 9001:2008

Global GreenTag International certification has stepped up to another league with external international standards recognition by certification body DNV-GL .  The announcement propels  the GreenTag  eco-label and certification mark – already the most advanced in Australia – to a new level of industry  trust around the globe, which is great news for GreenTag certified products!

As a leading conformance body, GreenTag now holds external verification that is compliant to  ISO 17065 (pertaining to the rules for certification bodies) and ISO 9001:2008 (pertaining to the quality management system of GreenTag’s certification processes).   The GreenTag  certification mark was already externally verified to ISO 14024 by the certification body Compass in 2015.

To be Externally Verified at these ISO standards adds an additional layer of confidence for GreenTag   – providing assurance for manufacturers who submit their products to be certified by the label and also for industry professionals, government bodies  and GreenTag certified product end users.

Gaining  DNV-GL  Verification also assures the market that GreenTag  assessors are competent to carry out certification procedures at the high levels  that have  been set by the Global GreenTag International Certification Standard V.4  and also the rules set out for  Peer Review Assessments.

Speaking on the announcement, GreenTag’s Co-Founder, Program Director and CEO David Baggs states that it has always been critical that GreenTag stands out as an independent and scientifically robust certification body and also as an innovative label.

GreenTag is a certification leader in many ways.  In Australia, it is the only ACCC approved certification mark in the building sector.   GreenTag is also renowned for being  the  first certifier  in the world to introduce  Life Cycle Analysis and Beyond LCA assessment.

GreenTag’s  team of product assessors and the label’s National Advisory Committee, says David, are continuously guided by GreenTag’s mission to protect and regenerate natural systems and resources by supporting manufacturers, professionals and consumers with certification standards and metrics that encourage growth and greater market demand for healthy, safe and earth friendly products.

The GreenTag mission  is commensurate in many ways, says David, with the high standards of DNV-GL, whose  purpose  is to help make the world safer, smarter and greener.  “GreenTag’s aim is to offer product certification at the highest levels and our goal is to keep pushing those levels higher. We already have some new developments in the pipeline.”

“We have not ceased our development to improve the GreenTag certification system since we launched in 2010, and this is why we apply to one of the toughest auditing firms in the world to verify our processes.”

“We want GreenTag to be a leader in the certification field. To be that, it is crucial that we also submit GreenTag’s internal processes to undergo the same high level of scrutiny for  transparency and  information disclosure that we place on product claims and take manufacturers through.”
